About Us
Heywood Orchards is a third-generation family-owned company. It all started with Arthur and Lilius Heywood, who purchased the property known affectionately as the “Home Block” to farm fruit and tobacco. Paul and Mike took the torch from their parents in the ’60s, and managed the transition from tobacco to kiwifruit and apples, all the while growing the operation.
Most recently, under the direction of Evan Heywood and Scott Heywood, the company has spread across 115 hectares, growing apples, pears and kiwifruit and is proudly showcased on the global fruit stage, as a founding member of Golden Bay Fruit.
Today, with General Manager Justin Wehner at the helm, Heywood Orchards is striving to apply modern, forward-thinking strategies into its everyday orchard operations and future growth strategies.
Scott Heywood oversees our orchard development programme and staffing intakes for the RSE Scheme (together with Mel Heywood).
Outside of work, he is a keen outdoorsman into hunting, fishing, diving, and camping.
Evan Heywood is one of the founding directors and the current CEO of Golden Bay Fruit. Like Scott, Evan has orchard management in the blood.
When he’s not working, Evan enjoys golf, mountain biking, skiing, and fishing.

Our apple, pear, and kiwifruit orchards are located throughout the Motueka and Riwaka area, with locations at:

Golden Bay Fruit
We are part of Golden Bay Fruit – a vertically integrated fruit-growing company based in Motueka, born out of multi-generation growers who decided to gather to create a sustainable business for future generations. This gives us the opportunity to combine packing resources and infrastructure, together with greater selling power to the export market, creating value for our team and community!
Fruit
We grow approximately 86 hectares of apples, with the following varieties grown – Ambrosia™, Brookfield™, Cherry Gala™, Dazzle™, Envy™, Fuji, Granny Smith, Jazz™, Jugala, Koru®, Lady in Red, Miranda™, Posh™, Rosy Glow, Royal Gala & Sassy™.
There are approximately 22 hectares of kiwifruit. Varieties grown are Zespri™ Green, Zespri™ Sun Gold™ & our most recent addition Zespri RubyRed™.
There are approximately 9 hectare of pears, growing both Belle de Jumet (Honey Belle™) and Piqa® varieties
